Naming rights to our publicly owned places and spaces in Victoria BC

You may have heard that the Victoria City Council is considering a proposal to sell the naming rights to public facilities in the city. Dr. Reuben Rose-Redwood at the University of Victoria, Department of Geography recently wrote a letter to the editor of the Times Colonist:

Nick Pope, geog alumni - travels, work and life in China

Nicholas Pope did his honours paper in 2008 using community mapping to help ESL students orient themselves to Victoria and campus life.

Since graduating in 2008, he has been living, working, studying and traveling in China.

Nick is back in Victoria for a couple of months and will be tellings us about some of his experiences in China and Tibet at the Wandering Geographer's Club lunch time series.

Shelbourne Corridor Open House January 7, 2011

The Shelbourne Corridor Action Plan project held an open house Thursday, January 27th, 5 to 8 p.m. at St. Aidan's United Church, displaying the results of the community consultation's map vision survey facilitated by the Office of Community Based Research and UVic's proposed Community Mapping Initiative.

Uni 102 Community Mapping Course 2011

UVic Geography Department's Ken Josephson (Technical Services - Cartographer, Graphic Designer/Artist) & John Newcomb (recently retired Senior Lab Instructor/Course Advisor) will once again team-up to present a dynamic 2-part workshop to introduce the concept of Community Mapping to the students of UVic's Continuing Studies Uni 102, Feb 22 & 24, 2011.

Welcome To Geography Fall 2010

On Thursday, October 7th, 2010, from 11 am - 1:30 pm in the SSM Courtyard, the UVic Geography Department hosted a Welcome To Geography event, providing an opportunity to meet-and-greet with the dean, faculty and students of Geography.

Activities included:

  • Message-bearing tree sculpture hung with colourful autumn leaves inscribed with our collective Hopes & Wishes
  • An opportunity to "Put Yourself On The Map", noting places where we were born, our home/heart connections, and the roots of our mothers and fathers

The Wayfinding Signpost, installed temporarily on Sept 2 for the first 2 Weeks of Classes at UVic, was created by the August Uni 201 The Art of Place class, taught by Dr. Brenda Beckwith (UVic Environmental Studies) and Ken Josephson (UVic Geography)!

Uni 201 - The Art of Place: Role of Community-based Art in Academia

This Uni 201 course, The Art of Place: Role of Community-based Art in Academia, is open to Graduates of Uni 101/102, and will be taught by Dr. Brenda Beckwith (UVic Environmental Studies) and Ken Josephson (UVic Geography), on Tuesdays, August 10 - 31, 2010, from 6:30 to 9 pm, in SS&M Building, Board Room B211/215.

Geog 391 Community Mapping - Credit Course

Associated Project: 

UVic's Geography Department proudly presents their first credit course in Community Mapping - Geog 391, an intense, short summer term course, with the theme of Rural Community Health, offered May 11 - June 2, 2010.

The course will be taught by Charles Burnett, & assisted by volunteer community mappers Ken Josephson, Wendy Anthony & Theresa Fingler.

Local Binners Access Map Launched

On April 9, 2010, UVic Geography's Community-Based Research Laboratory (CBRL) unveiled a map/pamphlet of downtown services for Victoria's local binning community.
